Green Innovation Reduces Hazardous Waste
Precision Collision Center, LLC in the Northland area researched and found a safer, more environmentally-friendly process to spray paint automobiles and trucks. In the past their traditional solvent-based products required drums and drums of hazardous waste being picked up for certified disposal. Today ninety five percent of that is eliminated by using newly introduced waterborne paints. Plus, there is an added benefit of spraying without Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) being emitted into the air.
Because collision repair shops have a huge environmental impact, California legislation mandated the switch from solvent-based paints to waterborne products by January 2009. This is not yet required in the Midwest. Precision Collision investigated the option when they learned about the new process from ColorVision, their distributor for PPG Paints.
“A water-based process requires a complete changeover with investment in new equipment and spraying techniques,” says Chris Jones, owner. “We were very nervous being the first in our area but wanted to stay at the forefront of technology and do our part in protecting the environment. ColorVision was instrumental in showing us what it would take and helped train our paint technicians. It’s actually easier than we expected.”
While customers benefit with outstanding color match, the real test for Jones was the paint technicians and they gave water-based spraying two thumbs up. Application and drying times are much faster thus increasing productivity. But, the key advantage has been the ease of color selection. Because eighty percent of factory paint is now water-based, choosing colors and mixing are simpler. Newly formulated anti-settling technology yields a better appearance, especially for metallics.
Precision Collision has always taken a proactive approach to quality and environmental issues and they feel the change to water-based spraying delivers both. They encourage other collision centers to follow their lead in going green.
Our Commitment to Going—and Staying--Green
Like other conscientious business owners, we recycle cans, plastics and papers. We’re also moving toward a paperless environment in which we scan invoices and estimates, eliminating excess copies and increasing accessibility for our employees.
Unlike traditional businesses, the collision repair field enables us to take our commitment to protecting the environment even further. We are able to recycle damaged car parts and scrap metal, including radiators, batteries, tires and more.
And, after extensive research, we’ve adopted the use of safer, environmentally-friendly waterborne paints to spray paint automobiles and trucks. Waterborne paints offer a better color selection and faster drying times without emitting risky Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) or contributing to an already dangerous hazardous waste problem.
We see the value in conducting our business, from start to finish, the right way. Although it is a gradual and lengthy process, we are committed to implementing the steps necessary to eliminate our commercial waste through recycling and responsible disposal.
We are wholeheartedly dedicated to providing you with quality repairs, complemented by outstanding customer service, in the most environmentally friendly way we can. Please visit our Web site frequently to stay on top of all the innovative ways we conduct business at Precision Collision Center.
